Analysis: Day Shift

"Day Shift" is a new vampire hunting movie starring Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco. The story follows a blue collar father who wants to provide a comfortable life for his daughter. However, his job as a pool cleaner in San Fernando Valley is just a façade for his true source of income: hunting and killing vampires for the International Union of Vampire Hunters.

The premise sounds exciting, but can J.J. Perry deliver on it?

The opening scene in "Day Shift" is a crazy action sequence with Jamie Foxx shotgun blasting the hell out of an old lady who turns out to be a vampire, which then becomes this nuts fight sequence between the two of them that is such a blast. This movie has a great deal of fun with rag-doll action scenes. It makes those scenes pop in a different way than many of the action blockbusters or Netflix movies. It's easy not to think about the old saying, "action speaks Louder than words". I believe that Day Shift is able to successfully use dialogue and action to help the plot and character growth. Jamie Foxx's villain, the vampire, is killed. His partner has a hilarious exchange about how he thought she was going "to turn into a bat, or something". It is moments like these that elevate "Day Shift," over other movies of the same genre.

Day Shift may be the worst movie ever made. It is obvious what they wanted to do but they failed so badly. The acting is poor, the dialogue is stilted and the plot is a mess. Yet, somehow I enjoyed it. Maybe it's because it was vampire movies I love, or maybe it is because I just like bad movies. Day Shift was great. While it's not the best movie, it's great fun. And really, that's all I ask from a movie like this.

Day Shift had mixed reviews. There is some great action and fun characters (the brothers Seth and Seth), but the villain is horrible and there are many mediocre characters. There were scenes that could have been added but they didn't. Bud's neighbor behaves like she's a friend, even though she only had 3 minutes of screentime before the final scene. This makes the characters who are better than others shine even more. Overall, the movie is enjoyable, but it could have been even (posted) better.

Snoop Dogg was almost forgotten about. He is great in Day Shift. It's worth the entire movie to watch him. His humor is infectious and he delivers some memorable lines. But he is also so natural in his role. He's natural at the role.
